PZEVs (Partially Zero Emissions Vehicles)
I had no idea PZEVs existed until a few days ago, but I knew I had to learn more, leading me to write this section. PZEVs - or partially zero emissions vehicles - are most commonly found among Subarus, with all 2.5 liter new models being a PZEV, “Classified as the cleanest-running gasoline-powered car on the market,” following the Super Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle (SULEV) tailpipe standard with zero evaporative emissions. There’s also an impressive warranty to maintain its emissions for 15 years/150,000 miles.
For more info from Subaru, visit this link.
However, these emissions don’t transfer to fuel efficency, where hybrids (and EVs) obviously shine. (Although the Subaru lineup isn’t bad, the 2023 Subaru Forester gets 26/33 mpg, and it’s an SUV!) All hybrids are also PZEVs, but if that’s not an option for you, and an EV isn’t, then consider a PZEV!

US skiers to don climate change-themed race suits at worlds (AP News) - Surprisingly, it’s more than just a suit design! They’ve worked with nonprofit Protect our Winters, with hopes of educating and mobilizing the snow sports community to advocate for clean energy technologies and policies.
“Although a race suit is not solving climate change, it is a move to continue the conversation and show that U.S Ski & Snowboard and its athletes are committed to being a part of the future,” said Sophie Goldschmidt, the president and CEO of U.S. Ski & Snowboard.
Good climate news
Biden restores protection to Tongass National Forest - Spanning almost 17 million acres, the Tongass National Forest of Alaska is once again protected from logging and road-building! (After being previously stripped from Trump… surprise surprise)
Wrap-up
Just a heads-up, next Sunday in the U.S. is the Super Bowl, and if you’re someone who likes to watch the commercials, I challenge you to turn it off this year (I will be doing so!). Companies spend millions for just a few minutes or less to influence you, but capitalism isn’t getting through to us this year. ;) (And just a general reminder to refuse the subtle influences of capitalism!)
Also, happy Black History Month! As you know, environmental injustice is a social justice issue, and there are so many incredible Black environmentalists that are so often overlooked. Let’s honor them this month!
