No. 16: Can monarchies have climate plans?
Actually still wondering myself... seems to go against ~the grain~
Hi everyone, and welcome new subscribers, hope you like it here! :))) My busier schedule has kind of shortened these, but if you REALLY want a particular topic, let me know and I’ll try to make it happen!
Talking to others about climate change
Let’s be real, it can be hard to bring up the climate crisis to friends and family, as it’s a hard, tough topic that “darkens” the mood, but if you’re just as passionate or worried about it as I am, why wouldn’t you tell others? I’ve compiled some tips from various websites and myself to give you the breakdown of how you can respectfully inform your conservative grandparents to anxious friends (shout out if you’re an anxious friend!).
republicEN, a website housing republican environmentalists (definitely share with your conservative family members), recommends:
Bringing it up with current events, like extreme weather (floods, fires, etc.)
Don’t try to convince, but try to listen to their side (even if their claims are total BS)
Make it a continual conversation (‘I can send you the link,’ or ‘Let’s continue our thoughts at the next meetup!’)
BBC suggests some other specific strategies:
Try not to just recite the facts, but instead explain how it impacts them and you (weather, expenses, health, etc.)
Apply a worldview. “Prof van der Linden believes that changing the minds of climate deniers is impossible without affirming - to some extent - their worldview. He says it's important to "[expose] techniques of manipulation" by asking questions such as: ‘Have you considered that some of these theories might be created to take advantage of people?’”
Remain humble and gentle, check your tone, remain on even ground.
If you have the time and interest, you can enroll in a climate change course from the University of Colorado Boulder with a section on responses!

It’s Time to Make Cities More Rural (Wired) - Crops like lettuce, cucumbers, and root vegetables produce four times the yield when grown in cities, although not as efficient as they must be harvested by hands.Overall though, the benefits outway any disadvantages, with attracting more pollinators and the water vapor the plants release can cool surrounding areas!
King Charles Is Too Political for the USA (Politico) - Charles has a climate agenda (countless speeches, wrote books, launched the Sustainable Markets Initiative) but also $$$?! (But also Yahoo! News thinks he no longer does… read both articles and comment your thoughts below!!)
Good climate news <3
Dutch city of Haarlem may be world’s first to ban most meat ads - Although 95% of people in the Netherlands eat meat, this ban wouldn’t be the only commerical ban in the area, as Amsterdam and The Hague have banned advertisements for aviation and fossil fuel industries, respectively. The ban would be enforced in as early as 2024.
World Bank Group Delivers Record $31.7 Billion in Climate Finance in Fiscal Year 2022 - The World Bank, which delivers financial and technical assistance to global challenges, like the climate crisis. Funding for July 21 - June 22 exceeded “the target set in the Group’s Climate Change Action Plan for 2021-2025 to deploy an average of 35% of the institution’s financing in support of climate action.”
The first Alaskan has been elected to Congress - Mary Peltola, a member of the Yup’ik tribe has won Alaska’s sole seat in the U.S. House. She has plans to restore the salmon population and opposes the Pebble Mine project.
